Relaxed Building Permit Policy

The Silver Lake Institute has updated and relaxed its Building & Remodeling Permit Policy to make the process clearer and reduce the number of projects that require SLI approval.
What’s New
Under the revised policy, fewer projects now require an SLI permit. Routine maintenance and repairs—such as roofing, foundation work, electrical updates, and minor plumbing—no longer need an SLI permit as long as they don’t change a building’s footprint, height, or exterior appearance.
When You Do Need an SLI Permit
An SLI permit is now required for:
Any new structure (barns, garages, sheds, etc.)
Any project that changes the footprint, height, or exterior appearance of a building (including additions, new decks/porches/stoops)
Demolition of any existing structure
When You Do Not Need an SLI Permit
No SLI permit is needed for routine maintenance or repairs that do not change the building’s footprint or exterior (e.g., roofing, foundation work, electrical, minor plumbing).
No permit is required for seasonal docks on leased waterfront.
Note: The Town of Castile, Wyoming County, or the DEC may still require permits, even if SLI does not.
If you’re unsure whether your project needs a SLI permit, please contact the office before beginning work.
